Simulators help to fight oil pollution

‘Be prepared!’ This could be the motto of the entire shipping industry today. The statement is especially relevant for the oil tanker fleet. The growth of oil transportation increases the risk of accidents. The question is not whether or not an accident happens, but when it happens. Thus, training in oil spill preparedness proves more and more vital.
Transas Potential Incident Simulation, Control and Evaluation System (PISCES) is an incident response simulator intended for preparing and conducting command centre exercises/area drills with particular focus on oil spill response. PISCES software uses a precise mathematical model of the oil spill, integrated in a cartographic shell based on vector nautical charts.
PISCES provides the exercise participants with comprehensive information environment based on the mathematical modeling of an oil spill interacting with surroundings and combat facilities. PISCES operating modes are used for automating the instructor’s activities, reproducing “exercise truth” for trainees and recording the exercise key events.
Several operators may connect via LAN to the same exercise and work together in a common simulation environment. Extensive collection of vector nautical charts supplied with PISCES provides professionally looking background for situation display and allows fast creation of a scenario in any region worldwide. Automatic procedure directly acquires vector presentation of a coastline from nautical charts within incident area.
Transas PISCES received high recognition from the maritime industry professionals when selected as the winner at the Seatrade Dubai International Maritime Awards 2005 in the category: Countering Marine and Atmospheric Pollution.
