Oil majors help Indonesian earthquake victims

The earthquake that devastated the central region of the island of Java around the city of Yogyakarta killed thousands of people and destroyed several thousand homes, leaving more than 5,000 people dead and over 200,000 people homeless.
Total and the Group’s local subsidiary provided logistical support for the emergency team of 40 doctors sent by the French government and have sent a speci alised intervention team to support relief workers under the responsibility of the Indonesian Minister of Energy. Total has also donated $1million dollars to the Indonesian Red Cross. Total has been in the country for close to 40 years with some 2,000 employees.
A team from BP Indonesia, including two doctors, travelled to the site with medical supplies and tents to support the relief efforts. Approximately $80,000 was made available shortly after the quake for emergency relief. Of that, around $13,000 has been distributed directly. Another $50,000 was distributed through BP Migas, Indonesia’s oil and gas regulatory body.
BP has pledged $1 million through the BP Foundation to aid earthquake relief efforts. The funds will be distributed across two programmes. A rescue programme, managed by the Indonesian Red Cross and Mer-C, will provide medical aid, temporary shelters and other basic needs, including food and clean water.
A recovery programme managed via Save the Children and the respected local foundation, Dompet Dhuafa, will provide schooling and counselling in quake-stricken areas over a period of three years.
