The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi signed an agreement with the Austr ali an GRM International Pty Ltd to carry out a comprehensive soil survey for Abu Dhabi . This survey was already given the green light by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council back in 2005.

The survey will assist decision-makers in future land use planning on scientific grounds. It will also provide an on-the-ground, scientific inventory of soil resources, help in developing a soil database using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), prepare a soil survey report and soil and land use maps and build the capacity of UAE nationals.

The soil will be mapped and classified using the latest satellite images, and norms and standards of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Planners, engineers and developers will be able to use the soil survey maps and data to evaluate soils for engineering purposes, select sites for residence, agriculture, industry, construction, routes for highways, or golf courses and identify special practices needed to ensure proper construction.

The survey, which will be technically supervised by Dubai-based International Center for Bios ali ne Agriculture (ICBA), aims to provide baseline information to better understand, manage, conserve and sustain the Emirate’s precious soil resources.

Aside from experts, the survey can also benefit teachers and students as the information can help them have better understanding, the agency said.
