Arabian experts discussed persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the recent meeting in Bahrain .

POPs are chemical substances that bio-accumulate through the food web and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment.

United Nations Industrial Development Organisation POPs unit chief Dr Mohamad Eisa said: " Persistent organic pollutants’ semi-volatile character means their effects are felt not only in areas close to their release but globally.Chronic impairment to human health through environmental exposure to POPs has direct implications to national and international efforts to meet development targets in human health and indirectly impacts on efforts to reduce poverty."
