Panamanian Ro-Ro vessel and a Greek tanker collided on the night of Monday, May 23, causing a 700 tonnes oil spill 57 nautical miles off Fujairah. The tanker was loaded with 190,000 tonnes of Medium Kuwaiti Crude Oil while the ship was transporting merchandise.
The Fujairah Port Authority immediately responded with an emergency plan on the oil crisis and announced that the spillage is under control.
“We are conducting modelling to determine where the oil is likely to go,” said Alex Spence, Operations Manager, Seacor Environmental Services Middle East (SESME). “We were first told that the oil spill was a minor incident. But 700 tonnes of oil spill is equivalent to 4,000 to 5,000 barrels of oil, and that is not minor. So we are all on guard for any upcoming environmental risk.”
“That’s why we have already contacted 300 contractors to be on call and also informed big hotels and other shipping companies about this incident.”
