New Iraqi Ports to Include 50 Berths, a Railway and international airport

Iraqi officials in the transport sector and the Iraqi Port Establishment have confirmed that the project of the Great Iraqi Port, carried out nowadays in the south of Basra (600 km south of Baghdad), enjoys exclusively a strategic and economical significance in Iraq, whether as for providing more job opportunities or promoting the performance of the Iraqi ports, according to a local daily, Hayat.
The new port will receive the importing and exporting cargo ships, which is expected to amount to 10 tons monthly. The Iraqi ministry of transport has announced that it has begun in implementing the project of the great Iraqi port which will include more 50 specialized, oil and commercial ports carried out according to the global designs and specifications capable of receiving the titanic oil tankers and ships.
The concerned reports showed that the port will set up thousands of acres before the entrance of the Arabian Gulf in Fao.
"Establishing this port is a step towards the direction of serving and promoting the transport sector; it will facilitates the flow of ships coming to the region and make it a competitive commercial outlet in the Gulf area in general", Louay Hatem Al Urs, Iraqi minister of transport, said
He showed that 50 berths of the new port will be expanded by zones for discharging, exporting, storehouses, administrative complexes and residencies. A railway will be later set up besides a sea highway and an international airport.
It is noteworthy that more 100 Iraqi carriers are preparing to open their headquarters in Fao area. The owners of these businesses are drawing attention to the necessity of getting a proper support from the government because of the rise of the land and estate prices.
"The various berths in the new port will transform the region into an unprecedented commercial hot point in addition to the future economical and the tourist benefits, Sadoun Maryosh, maritime expert in Arabian Maritime Company, explained.
Sadoun stressed the importance of cutting the fees docking in the port, especially the future will experience a surge in the volume of the Iraqi exports and imports.
Generally speaking, the maritime sector in Iraq has faced many problems as a result of the chaos and contradictory policies between the maritime sector and the ports authorities.
