Turkey 'violating EU terms with ship ban'

Posted: 06 April 2005

Turkey is violating its customs union accord with the European Union by banning Cypriot ships from its ports, EU newcomer Cyprus said, according to local newsreports.

Ankara has not allowed Cypriot vessels to dock at Turkish ports since 1987, reflecting sour relations between the two neighbours which went to war in 1974.

The Greek Cypriots have the EU's third largest shipping fleet. It was once the world's fourth largest until the Turkish blockade kicked in, pushing it down to eighth spot.

Cyprus joined the EU last May represented by the Greek Cypriot government. Ankara backs a tiny Turkish Cypriot enclave in the north and has no formal ties with the Greek Cypriots
