Spill drill at tanker berth

The United Arab Emirates’ Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) group has conducted a simulated joint oil spill emergency response exercise at one of Emirates Petroleum Products Company (Eppco) Terminal’s tanker berths at Jebel Ali Port.
The simulated drill was conducted to test the emergency response programmes of the various port safety, environment, fire fighting and other agencies.

The “live” exercise saw a five minutes overflow of 125 cubic metres gas oil. The spill “gushed” from an Eppco vessel being loaded at a tanker berth. Damage control saw all participants swinging into action, to control the “spill” and avert a major fire and pollution catastrophe.
EHS CEO Ahmed A Hussain said: “EHS is happy with the success of this significant exercise, which we conducted to highlight the importance of formulating and executing oil spill prevention programmes across all bodies of water and to protect the environment, life, property and businesses from the risk of pollution.”
