Recycling urged in Arab countries

A UN programme in Qatar aimed at raising youth awareness of waste management has proved successful. Under the project, students were taught how to reduce and reuse waste products.
“The Qatar campaign was highly successful. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) is now planning to export the Qatari experience to other Arab countries,” Benno Boer of Unesco’s regional office in Doha said. Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are some of the countries joining the initiative.
The programme was carried out in selected schools in association with the Ministry of Education between 2003 and 2005. A National Recycling Coordination Committee was later established.
According to Unesco, the recycling industry in Arabia is still in its infancy. In Qatar, only three per cent of waste products are being recycled.
