UAE’s water consumption
Send this news
Water consumption in the United Arab Emirates is the highest in the world - exceeding 100 gallons per person every day - with an annual growth rate of 8-10 per cent, according to official reports.
Groundwater levels in the country have dropped at a rate of one metre every year for the past 30 years. Sharjah, one of UAE’s seven emirates, consumes over 10 billion gallons of water every year.
The per capita consumption of water is around 300 litres per day and experts warn that unless consumption is cut, the emirate will face severe water shortages in the future.
The emirate has taken note and asked property developers to re-use waste water from laundries and washbasins for irrigation and landscaping. An industry expert said UAE municipalities are also enforcing the re-use of industrial waste water.
A study by Emirates Industrial Bank revealed that UAE’s water consumption is very high compared to Western countries due to climatic conditions and high per capita income. The demand is increasing year-on-year due to the growth in tourism.
The UAE now has the highest per capita consumption of bottled water (265 litres per year) because of economic prosperity and presence of good local brands of bottled water, said Richard Hall, Chairman of Zenith International, organisers of the second Global Bottled Water Congress held in Dubai recently.
Water production in the UAE reached more than 195 gallons in 2004 with most of the demands in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Sources of water in the country mainly come from desalination and groundwater wells.
