The Omani Authority for Regional Municipalities, Environment and Water Resources and Saudi Aramco recently concluded a joint oil spill drill. The drill simulated a ship collision resulting in the release of almost 40,000 barrels of oil, 15 miles offshore Muscat.
It involved several government entities and Aramco’s shipping subsidiary, Vela International Marine. Aramco deployed its pollution control vessel Midyan from its port in Ras Tanura and other oil spill combat resources including booms, skimmers and chemical dispersants.
Omani and Saudi aircraft were deployed to spray simulated dispersant over the area.
The spill drill was conducted with Recso’s coordination and in collaboration with Aramco-owned Vela, Omani authorities, coastguards and the local municipalities, said Mohammad S. Al-Gusaier, Saudi Aramco’s Oil Spill committee chair.
He added: “Part of my responsibility as the chairman is to ensure adequate coordination. This particular one involves the collision of our Vela ship. Our involvement runs from the arrangement of the drill, the follow-up and the coordination of all the items concerned.”
