Overhaul of SPM
Send this news
Kuwait Crude is exported through the onshore terminal (North Pier) and through the offshore SPM (Single Point Moorings) CALM buoys at Mina Al-Ahmadi. Recently Kuwait Oil Company, which owns SPMs, undertook the highly technical and high-risk project of dry-docking, overhauling and classification of these SPMs.
The project involved a series of operations including flushing of crude and bunker lines, disconnection of floating and under-buoy hoses, disconnection of electrical cables and six anchor cables and towage of the SPM to the dry-dock. In the dry dock, the entire buoy body was dismantled, sand-blasted, faired, painted, hydraulic and electrical equipments overhauled and many parts renewed.
The entire process was then worked in reverse. After re-mantling, towing and fixing it back in its position, all the normal and emergency systems were checked and lines pressure-tested. The buoy is undergoing a re-commissioning period of 10 tanker loading operations, following which the second SPM will undergo the same procedure.
KOC has also classed the SPM with Lloyd’s Register, and will do the same for the other SPM. The Synchro-Lifts at the HEISCO Shipyard in Kuwait were utilized for dry-docking of the Calm Buoy.
