Seacor Responds to an Oil Spill outside of Basra
Seacor Environmental Services Middle East (SESME) was called upon to respond to the request of Southern Oil Company (of Iraq) to combat a major spill in the Tigris river in February 2005.
Two separate spills had occurred in early February one from the Refinery and a second one from a pipeline rupture. Both had combined in the fast moving river to present a single larger spill south of Basra. The spill was large enough to affect irrigation and water usages all along the river front.
Seacor was the only spill response company that was capable of mounting a major offensive response into Iraq on a moment’s notice. General Manager/Incident Commander, Kirk Davis commented that;
“Spills that occur in inland rivers present a major challenge to professional oil spill responders.
The need for rapid movement of equipment along the river banks, implementation of an incident command system (ICS), collection of the recovered oil and the requirement to employ dedicated skimmers and boom systems to effectively slow the oil down to enable it to be recovered were major challenges faced by SESME”.
Clearly, this was a very specialised response and one requiring highly capable equipment and personnel. We used our skills here but also tapped into the unlimited amount of knowledge, experience and advice of Seacor Environment Services International (SESI) to contribute to our overall efforts.
