QP Establishes Department to Fight Oil Pollution

Under directives of H.H. the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Chairman of the Supreme Council for Environment and Natural Reserves, Qatar Petroleum has established a department for fighting oil and marine pollution.
Its first task is to put the organisational structure in place with suitable human and financial resources to raise the abilities to fight oil pollution in the State and be on equal footing with international standards.
“The purpose that QP intended in establishing this department is for protecting the territorial waters and beaches from the negative effects that harm the environment,” said Mohammed Jassim Al-Maslamani, Manager HSE Regulation, at Qatar Petroleum.
He added: “H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Industry ordered for a full study about the beaches, marine zones and the vital establishments in the state, showing the best means to protect it.” An American company specialising in this field conducted the study.
Al-Maslamani said three emergency centers to fight oil pollution would be established, at Halul, Ras Laffan and Mesaieed
