Keeping With Best Practices
Bapco Updating Oil Spill Contingency Plan
Posted: March 2005
It is Bapco’s policy to prevent all pollution incidents through awareness, training and operational control; however, contingency plans are in place to promptly deal with any pollution incidents that may arise. The original comprehensive Oil Spill Response Contingency Plan was developed more than 20 years ago. This plan has been reviewed over the years with a major revision in 1995, followed by an update in 1999. For the purpose of keeping up with the best practices, Bapco is currently undertaking a major review of its plan. The review involves the adoption of the Incident Command System (ICS) for management of emergencies. The ICS is widely adopted as a streamlined approach to emergency management and is recommended by the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA).
This update will ensure alignment with the Bahrain National Oil Spill Contingency Plan. The Contingency Plan is exercised on a regular basis to ensure preparedness for emergencies and is intended to assist Company personnel in achieving a rapid and effective response to any oil spill arising from Company operations. The oil spill response organisation is well equipped and manned with highly trained staff. Drills and communication exercises are carried out regularly. Major exercises are performed every other year, involving the relevant government agencies to ensure effective preparedness and co-operation|
