An oil spill occurred in the early hours of 24 May 2005 when the Greek Flag tanker “Astro Lupus” collided with the Syrian flag Ro Ro vessel “Safari”.
The incident took place 57 nautical miles North East of the UAE Port of Fujairah. The tanker loaded with Arabian Light Crude Oil was en route to India and as a result of the collision sustained hull damage in the way of her number three port side cargo tank. An estimated 600-800 cubic metre of crude oil was lost overboard.
The spill was contained after two days, and Astro Lopus tanker was permitted to continue her voyage to India without further delay.
Those who responded were from the local ports authority and locally-based Fairdeal Marine Services.
“A primary survey of the incident area showed that a light sheen extending for a distance of three miles was spareading in a north easterly direction from casualty. An area of nine square nautical miles was affected,” said Abdalla El-Suleiman, Manager of Environmental Affairs, Fairdeal. “We mobilised our spill response vessel ‘Diva’ together with heavy duty booms, self-propelled and portable skimmers.”
The Spill Response plan was coordinated in conjunction with other interested Environmental Organizations, including MEMAC, ITOPF and the Iranian Coastguard.
